‘We’ve got him!’ shouted Robert, jumping to his feet.

The others jumped up as well, laughing.

All but Mallory.

‘Yeah,’ she said. ‘But just make sure we keep him! Let’s nail him into the box.’

However, nailing Hei into the box was not going to be as easy as they had hoped. There was no way they could lift the box without giving the cat a fair-sized chance to escape. Already it was yowling angrily, so it wasn’t likely to cooperate.

‘What’ll we do?’ asked Arthur.

Robert scratched his head. ‘Not sure,’ he said.

‘We’ll have to leave him there,’ said Arthur.

‘We can’t,’ said Mallory. ‘We have to take him to that horrible old guy.’

‘Mr Mugwort,’ Billy reminded her.

‘Yeah,’ said Mallory, ‘horrible old Mr Bugfart.’

Nancy giggled. Then she said, ‘I have an idea. There’s a lot of old boulders in the creek. We could fetch some of those to weigh down the top of the box. He’d never be able to lift it then.’

Arthur glanced at Mallory. He knew the creek well, and the pipe even better, but he did remember the rocks.

‘Smart idea,’ said Mallory sarcastically, ‘but we’re supposed to take the cat to old Bugfart. We can’t do that if the stupid cat’s sitting under a pile of rocks in a paddock, can we?’

Nancy did not take offence. Instead she smiled and said, ‘No, but you can go and tell Mr Mugwort to come to the cat, can’t you? It’s the same thing really, isn’t it?’

Arthur nodded. It was the same thing, really. And though she desperately wanted to argue, Mallory was forced to agree.
